Stussy Origins
Stussy was founded in the early 1980s at sun-splashed surfing Mecca Laguna Beach in California. The founder of our company, Shawn Stussy, was a gifted shaper of surf boards who had a strong attachment to the youth cultures of the emerging youth cultures of the time including the surf, skate and punk rock culture. He started printing t-shirts with a hand-drawn, one of a kind signature which is now our iconic logo to advertise his custom boards. By selling these shirts in his car together with his surfboards, he had had no idea that this small gesture would lead to revolutionizing the world.
The Rise of Streetwear
What had started out as an outgrowth of a surfboard business soon became phenomenon. Shawn was a designer who appealed to a generation that sought something real outside of everyday fashion to be worn. Stussy was more than a set of clothes, it was a statement, it was an anti-commercial gesture which appealed to people who believed in creativity and individuality. It was all driven by a network of like-minded DJs, artists and skaters referred to as the International Stussy Tribe whose spreading of the gospel of Stussy catapulted what would become known as streetwear to a global phenomenon.
Stussy’s Australian Chapter
Moving to Australia was a logical step in the evolution of Stussy where the Australian way of life was perhaps the best place where our brand with its free spirit and surfer mentality could fit perfectly. We are now an insider in the area streetwear movement with our styles being more of an American West Coast/Aussie distinct style mixed culture. Whether it is through our Specialized chapter stores in Sydney and Melbourne locations or our online presence, we are always excited to be a home to the Australian community with a carefully selected collection of our newest ranges, and classic pieces that stand the test of time.
